Labour Party Mourns Late Chief Amb. Yohana Yilpwan Margif (Wazirin Mushere)

The Labour Party, Plateau State Chapter, has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Chief Ambassador Yohana Yilpwan D. Margif (Wazirin Mushere), who died on Tuesday, 21st January, 2026, at the Jos University Teaching Hospital after a prolonged illness.

Ambassador Margif was a foremost leader and benefactor of the Labour Party in Plateau State and a respected statesman whose contributions to politics, peace-building, and humanitarian service left an indelible mark on the state and the nation at large.

In the build-up to the 2023 general elections, Ambassador Margif emerged as the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Plateau State. However, his candidacy was controversially withdrawn under claims that he had resigned, a development that plunged the party into an electoral crisis and contributed to its defeat, eventually paving the way for the emergence of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

Despite the injustice suffered, Ambassador Margif demonstrated uncommon maturity and forgiveness by reconciling with all those involved in the episode.

His capacity for peace and unity remained evident even in the face of personal and political sacrifice. As his Campaign Director-General at the time, the leadership of the party bears firsthand witness to his resilience and selflessness.

Beyond electoral politics, Ambassador Margif was the backbone of the Labour Party in Plateau State. He personally sponsored the party, strengthened its structure, and ensured that Plateau State remained actively represented in all national party engagements. His vision helped bring the Labour Party into wider electoral acceptance within the state.

Ambassador Margif was also widely known for his philanthropy and service to humanity.

He provided scholarships to students, donated vehicles to churches, mosques, and individuals, and played a vital role in peace efforts during the Yelwa–Shendam crisis. He further supported internally displaced persons (IDPs) with foodstuffs and building materials, among other humanitarian interventions.

In traditional leadership development, he will be remembered for constructing a befitting palace for the Mushere Chiefdom, a project commissioned by Distinguished Senator Victor Lar, symbolizing his commitment to cultural heritage and community development.

The Labour Party takes pride in the life, legacy, and achievements of Ambassador Yohana Yilpwan Margif, a man who gave his all for the advancement of his people, Plateau State, and Nigeria.

The party extends its heartfelt condolences to the Yilpwan family, the Mushere Chiefdom, and the entire Plateau State over this irreparable loss.

We pray that God Almighty grants the family and all who mourn him the strength and fortitude to bear the loss. Burial arrangements will be communicated by the family in due course.

The Labour Party also calls on all sons and daughters of Plateau State to rally around the bereaved family during this period of mourning.

May the soul of Chief Ambassador Yohana Yilpwan D. Margif (Wazirin Mushere) rest in perfect peace.
