In a bold move to eradicate mathematics phobia and strengthen numeracy skills among young learners, the African Mathematics Project (AMP), a civil society organization, has begun the presentation of awards to top-performing mathematics pupils in Taraba State.
The award ceremony, which held on Monday at Kingdom Heritage Model Schools in Jalingo, marked the official rollout of AMP’s initiative aimed at nurturing early interest in mathematics and improving academic performance in African schools.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of AMP, Mr. Abraham Moses, said the project was designed to confront the long-standing fear of mathematics by engaging pupils at an early stage and encouraging them to develop confidence and passion for the subject.
Mr. Moses, who was represented by Mr. Zebedee Daniel, explained that the initiative focuses on identifying exceptional pupils and grooming them as “mathematics ambassadors” capable of influencing their peers positively.
According to him, AMP identified no fewer than 1,100 outstanding mathematics pupils at Kingdom Heritage Model Schools and honoured them for their exceptional performance, a move he described as a strategic step towards changing negative perceptions about mathematics.
“The aim of this project is to instill the love of mathematics in primary school pupils and train them as ambassadors of mathematics.
By recognizing excellence early, we are helping children overcome fear and see mathematics as an exciting and achievable subject,” he said.
He added that AMP’s long-term goal is to raise a generation of young learners who will champion mathematics across schools and communities, thereby improving overall academic outcomes.
In her remarks, the Head Teacher of Kingdom Heritage Model Schools, Mrs. Rifkatu Ali, lauded AMP for the initiative, describing the selection of her school as one of the best-performing mathematics institutions as a major morale booster for teachers.
She noted that the recognition would further inspire teachers to redouble their efforts and ensure that mathematics becomes one of the most preferred subjects among pupils.
The event also featured reactions from award-winning pupils, including Godsgrace Ananum and Msendoo Anna Iormua, who attributed their love for mathematics to the encouragement and inspiration they received from their mothers.
The pupils, who currently lead their respective classes in mathematics performance, expressed their determination to become mathematics ambassadors and build a strong chain of mathematics education that would gain global recognition.
The AMP initiative, stakeholders believe, represents a significant step towards repositioning mathematics as a subject of interest rather than fear among young learners in Taraba State and beyond.
