The former Vice Chancellor University of Bokkos in plateau state North central Nigeria , professor Doknan Shani said he has passion for those disenfranchise, the poor of the poorest , orphans, widows and the disadvantage in the society.
As these are some of the propelling ingredient that is pushing me to contest the vacant southern zone senatorial seat to give me the impetus to actualise my dream of serving my people who have for long disenfranchise politically and otherwise.
The Former Vice Chancellor, University of Bokkos, Prof Doknan Sheni join in the race for the Plateau Southern Senatorial district under the All progressive Congress ,APC, stated this in an interview with journalist at his resident in Jos , plateau state, as says I would bring my wealth of experience in developing the zone through people orientation projects.
I believed after serving as the Vice Chancellor of the state owned University Bokkos, I have a lot to offer my people at the Southern senatorial zone of the state, and my understanding of all the senatorial zones in the state , particularly my senatorial district.
“I have travelled through the length and breath of the whole senatorial zone , but could be amazing that despite the zone has produced several senators in the time past, the zone cannot boast of portable water , that is just one item in it.”
Look at the agricultural backwardness of our people who are merely subsistence farmers , they don’t even known how to go about getting loan from the bank to boost their agricultural produce, nobody is mobilising these farmers for take off.
I wouldn’t blame the past senators for not putting in their best , but for me, I have a passion for people who have been disenfranchise, l have a passion to help the poor , orphans , widow and disadvantage, so when I look at them , it pains me to the bone marrow.
One of the issue of plateau politic is that of zoning , now there is this call for Quan’pa to complete there tenure, how do you react to that?
“That is very simple, without insulting anybody , l am part of the stakeholders of APC in the last 5 years from 2014 till date, there is no time of zoning of any district or local government.
The first person who have ever won the senatorial seat in the zone is from qua’pan, and the other person is from Shandam , if I am not mistaking.
Despite that people easily forget things does not mean we should continue with ignorance .
One thing i known as a normal understanding , if a governor come from a particular zone , no senator should come from there.
We have three federal constituency in the Southern zone which are Mikan , Shandam , Quan’pan , Wase and Lantang North and South.
If you look at this present government , you discover that appointment of the people that hold political positions, whether nominated or not , you see that Mikan , Shandam and Quan’pan dominate the other federal constituency.
Can you briefly tell us about your background?
“My father is a traditional ruler, l come from a ruling family from what we call Lohmak, is a chiefdom and my grandfather who is one of the eight recorded traditional ruler in the chiefdoms, the current traditional ruler is my father.”
We have two ruling family , it was when the last traditional ruler died that it came to the turn of my father.
The two families rotate the traditional stool between them , so I don’t want to go around bragging myself as a prince.
What impact did you want the people of your constituency feel if you are eventually elected?
Your question is every apt , you will understand that the key thing for the senator , is the constituency allowance .
My going around the senatorial zone , the grievances of the people is that the senators never spend the constituency allowance on a visible projects.
I want to change that narrative, which is going to be between me and the people of my constituency.
As I am going around, any constituency I go, l will ask them to identify any project that is more important to them, this to avoid what happened during the tenure of other senators to respect itself in my time.
If the project so identify by them can cover my constituency allowance, i will do it.
Secondly, if the project is beyond me , I will lobby for it at the National level using my connection as member of lawmaker. That will be my contract with the people of my constituency.I am not going to the National Assembly because of money.
By the Grace of God, i don’t need any money to feed myself and my family for the rest of my life . The little God has blessed me with, I am contented with it.
I known that some people will be thinking that the love for money that is propelling me to vie for the position of senator.
When l was the Vice Chancellor of the Plateau state University , Bokkos, I saw money but refused to dipped my finger into it.
I just want to developed the University for the legacy to be left for the children yet unborn, that I did.
Your party APC is clocking 5 years in power, what would be your score card?
“If you read the news paper, is already awash with the achievement of Mr President Mohammadu Buhari and our amiable Governor Simon Bako Lalong.
If you look at the state, there is a particular section known as “Lalong Legacy Project”.
That Lalong legacy project is to complete the manifestoes of the Apc in the state.
In our manifestoes the Apc, we have seven major areas which includes, infrastructure, agriculture and transportation, we have been trying to revived the transportation sector, just that it has National connection.
So even if the state government tried, it must have the support of the National power to succeed because some of the roads are federal roads.
You can see in the last election , his efforts to do all the rural roads in the 17 local government areas of the state, all these are enbended in the Apc manifestoes.
What is more important is human capital development, that is why in my zone, there is no presence of federal institutions like the university , polytechnic and so on.
As a professor , this is one of the easiest thing for me to do for my people.
I think is very easy for me to bring branch of open university to the zone.
I think that will be the first project I will pursue if I am voted in as the senator of plateau senatorial seat. Unless there are other legal handicap that may not be known to me for now.
So that Apc capital development would be achieved.
The other aspect of it is skill development.
These days, nobody care about your chains of certificates if you don’t have skills.
Some people approach me recently that they graduated for over 4-5 years without job.
My response to them is that the modern way of getting job has migrated from what it use to known in the past, we have to change to skills acquirsation.
This is what I hope to establish in my zone when I am voted in as a senator representing the southern senatorial zone of plateau state.
How did you hope to couple considering that you are coming from different background, which is academics?
According to the former president chief Olusegun Obasanjo,
” If good people don’t join politics , and when the bad people rule, don’t complain.” I may not have quoted him correctly.
Politic is a social contract, have something to do for your people. Nobody is born politician, they learn from the job, I hope my sincerity of doing things and my manifestoes would make the electorate Change their mind.
I want more academicians to venture into politic rather than the so call politicians
When I went round one of the district recently, they said most of the politicians that came to them, they don’t see them again untill election is in few months or weeks.
I told them that why I came , I am not a conventional politician.
That is where I developed the concept of spending the constituency allowance why the people supervised the project.
What is your call to your supporters?
My call to my supporters and to those who want to support me and they have not seen me, that time has come to amend the broken fence.
The time has come to try something new and that time is now and I am ready to lead the crusade.
