Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has once again demonstrated decisive leadership as his “Time Is Now” Administration records far-reaching achievements in the nutrition sub-sector, positioning Plateau State as a model for coordinated action against malnutrition in Nigeria.
These milestones were unveiled on Friday, December 19th, 2025, during a press briefing at the Plateau State Secretariat, Jos, held to commemorate the week-long nutrition celebrations at the state, national, and global levels.
Nigeria currently ranks first in Africa and second globally in child malnutrition, with Plateau State facing a stunting rate of 44.6 percent.
Beyond the human toll, malnutrition costs Nigeria over $1.5 billion annually, undermining productivity and long-term development.
Governor Mutfwang’s administration identified nutrition as both a public health emergency and a development priority, committing to decisive, system-wide reforms to safeguard the future of Plateau’s children.

Shortly after assuming office, the Governor adopted a multi-sectoral and grassroots-driven approach to nutrition governance.
In October 2023, the administration established Local Government Committees on Food and Nutrition across the state.
These committees were designed to move beyond policy rhetoric, ensuring community ownership, accountability, and locally tailored interventions at the grassroots.
To strengthen institutional response, the state undertook a comprehensive review of the Plateau State Food and Nutrition Policy (2024–2028).
The review aligned state priorities with emerging nutrition challenges and the evolving National Policy on Food and Nutrition, creating a unified framework for action across all tiers of government.
A major milestone came in July 2025 with the launch of the Nutrition 774 Initiative (N-774I).
Championed by Governor Mutfwang’s administration, the initiative elevated nutrition to a local government priority, empowering LGAs to design context-specific interventions while strengthening coordination nationwide.
To ensure sustainability, nutrition focal persons across local governments were trained and equipped to lead implementation, monitoring, and reporting.

The Plateau State Primary Health Care Board emerged as a central driver of implementation.
In June and December 2025, the state successfully conducted Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Weeks, reaching thousands of families.
Small-Quantity Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (SQ-LNS)
Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition
Provision of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements for pregnant women
Regular quarterly data review meetings ensured evidence-based decision-making and accountability.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health intensified food safety advocacy through World Food Safety Day celebrations, media engagements, and training of food vendors, reinforcing the link between safe food and optimal nutrition.
Governor Mutfwang’s nutrition drive extended beyond health :
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development promoted eco-friendly agricultural technologies.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industries trained MSMEs on food fortification, nutrition labeling, and regulatory compliance.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, working with the Ministry of Education and the ANRiN Programme, revived school gardens and orchards, using them as platforms for nutrition education and sustainable agriculture.
Recognizing that government alone cannot defeat malnutrition, the administration strengthened strategic partnerships :
UNICEF, through the Child Nutrition Match Fund (CNF), supported procurement of life-saving nutrition commodities for children aged 6–23 months, with phases launched from August 2025.
Zadchlo International Foundation (ZIF) led community sensitization, adolescent nutrition education, menstrual hygiene awareness, and WASH interventions across several LGAs.
Relief and Hope Foundation integrated nutrition and WASH education, reaching hundreds of adolescents and households in Langtang North and South.
Heal the Youth Foundation (HTYF) conducted nutrition assessments for nearly 700 individuals, trained women and girls in leadership and enterprise, and provided start-up grants in Jos North and South.
Almanah Rescue Mission advanced homestead farming through caregiver training and distribution of improved seedlings.
Dizauregi Services Limited supported vulnerable communities through fortified food production and nutrition awareness campaigns.
Collectively, these interventions reflect a coordinated, multi-sectoral response anchored on Governor Mutfwang’s development vision.
The administration is not only treating malnutrition but strengthening systems, empowering communities, and building long-term resilience.

While progress has been significant, the Plateau State Government acknowledges that the fight against malnutrition is far from over.
Sustained investment, deeper partnerships, and rigorous implementation remain critical.
Under Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s leadership, the message is clear :
nutrition is the foundation of human capital and economic growth, and for Plateau State, the time to act is now.
