The Chairman of Jos North Local Government, Hon. J.K. Chris, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and top security agencies have strongly condemned the gruesome killing of some youths reportedly attacked while travelling to another local government area to sell their goods.
The victims, believed to be Muslims, were allegedly intercepted and murdered by unidentified assailants in what sources described as a reprisal attack following the earlier killing of some community members, reportedly linked to suspected Fulani militia.
In swift response to the tragic development, Hon. J.K. Chris convened an emergency stakeholders’ meeting on February 24th, 2026, at the council secretariat in Jos North.

The meeting brought together religious leaders, traditional rulers, youth leaders, security agencies, and other critical stakeholders.
Addressing the gathering, the visibly concerned Chairman described the act as “inhuman, senseless, barbaric, and completely unacceptable.”
“It is no longer news that we are faced with a painful challenge,” he said. “Young, promising sons of Jos North were on their legitimate business when their lives were cut short for no reason. We condemn this evil in its totality.”
He stressed that the meeting was called not only to mourn the victims but to unite community leaders in preventing the incident from degenerating into a wider crisis.

Recounting the events and the tension that followed, the Chairman revealed that immediately after receiving reports of the killings, consultations began with the Plateau State Government and security heads to forestall reprisals.
He commended residents, youth leaders, and community stakeholders for resisting provocations.
“We have resolved to live together in peace in Jos North. We will not allow criminals to divide us along religious or ethnic lines,” Hon. Chris declared.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life. The perpetrators must be fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law.”

He also extended condolences to the bereaved families and appreciated security operatives who reportedly recovered the victims’ remains and ensured burial rites were conducted according to Islamic injunctions.
Hon. Chris disclosed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang personally intervened upon learning of the incident, immediately calling for calm and directing security agencies to intensify investigations.
According to the Chairman, the Governor emphasized the need to sustain the fragile but hard-earned peace in Jos North and across Plateau State.

The Governor’s intervention, stakeholders noted, helped to calm frayed nerves at a critical moment when tensions were rising.
Representing the Commissioner of Police, CP Bassy Ewah, the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force assured residents that security agencies were fully on top of the situation.
“We are going to investigate thoroughly. Those responsible will be identified and brought to justice,” he said.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the government and security agencies to handle this matter.”
He warned that any breakdown of law and order could result in strict security measures, including curfews, which would negatively impact economic and social activities.
Security presence has since been reinforced by operatives of the military task force Operation Enduring Peace, alongside other conventional and non-conventional security outfits.
In his remarks, the Deputy Chairman of Jos North, Kabir Muhammad Garkuwa, praised Hon. Chris for his tireless efforts in diffusing tension and preventing the situation from escalating into a full-blown crisis.

“You have demonstrated true leadership. Your swift action has helped restore calm and normalcy,” he said.
Despite the deep pain and outrage over the killings, stakeholders unanimously resolved to maintain peace and strengthen inter-community dialogue.
Hon.Chris conclude with passionate appeal,
“Jos North is cosmopolitan and fragile. We must not allow enemies of peace to destroy what we have built. Let us remain united, vigilant, and law-abiding. Justice will take its course.”

As investigations continue, residents remain hopeful that the perpetrators of what leaders have described as a heinous and cowardly act will soon be apprehended and prosecuted, while peace efforts in Jos North are sustained.
